TOTW: ‘Fairground’- Mabes
Previously praised by NME, Clash and Wonderland, Essex’s rising song writing jewel Mabes returns this summer with her brand new single ‘Fairground’, continuing her policy for regularly releasing Americana-tinged, impeccable pop anthems.
Mabes’ unique sound is the product of a lifelong obsession with Nashville’s song writing heritage. First picking up the guitar at the age of 15, Mabes’ journey began with acoustic nights in her hometown while still working a 9-5 job. Emulating her Nashville heroes would soon lead to international acclaim, with her debut album ‘Wait & See’ racked up over 38 Million Streams in its first year.
‘Fairground’ is a sanguine, slow-burning pop piece with more nods to her Country & Americana song writing roots. On the B-Side, ‘Weirdos’ is a cheerful alt-pop bop. Starting with the line ‘Think it’s time for a holiday’. Speaking on the new single, Mabes states:
“Fairground comes from a place of hurting, after my love moves or goes away and the relationship ends. “Now I got issues cos I really miss you”. And saying that I’ve been hurt by love before but every time I ‘go all in’ despite this, I give everything in love and I should know better but can’t help myself. ‘Maybe you just can’t win’ in love.”
