TOTW: Edwin Rosen – Leichter//kälter
Hailing from Germany Edwin Rosen’s latest offering ‘Leichter//kälter’ screams revival of the new wave & post-punk era. The track evokes associations to the likes of Joy Division, Molchat Doma, reminding listeners to the better times the 80’s. Currently sitting on over 1 million streams & counting the 20-year old’s debut single lives rent-free in many heads being used as the soundtrack of Gen Z’s on TikTok.
The track brings an element of rawness that comes through with elegance and swagger. The continuous 4 on the flour & 16th hi-hats will keep your head swaying while the padded riff oozes with colour creating the “neueneue deutsche welle” genre that Edwin himself invented.
The visual accompaniment goes hand in hand with the audio bringing the track to life. There’s something about sunsets, towers blocks on film that is aesthetically pleasing. A simple yet effective music video.
“When I first uploaded «leichter// kälter», I didn’t expect much and didn’t really promote the song and therefore didn’t film a video either. But then I was contacted by the Parisian experimental filmmaker Nicolas Medy. Nicolas was a fan of the song and wanted to ask me if he could use my song in his upcoming short «Nuit de Chine». I agreed and in exchange he cut the lyric video for «leichter//kälter» from footage from his archive, since filming was made rather difficult through the ongoing pandemic. «J’ai le nez dans le guidon» is Nicolas‘ theme for the video. His recordings help to underline the feeling of nostalgia and melancholia that the song also conveys.”
