Pavan ‘My Optical Best’
It’s been a busy old week so far, so apologies for being MIA for the last couple of days. However, I am slowly conquering the mountain of work I was nervously staring up at on Monday morning, so I finally have time to do what I do best: prattle on about all kinds of crap and recommend some new music for your listening pleasure. Speaking of mountains, Mount Everest has been in the press quite frequently this week, mainly due to reports of the increasing levels of rubbish, discarded climbing equipment, and human excrement (yuck) that intrepid explorers are prone to leaving on its peaks. Perhaps most worrying are the huge amounts of plastic we are collectively polluting the world’s most beautiful natural environments with, namely our oceans. In fact, according to the Oxford English Dictionary, ‘plastic’ is the Children’s Word Of The Year, due to the alarming frequency with which is is being used in children’s creative writing projects. Interestingly, the use of the word ‘plastic’ has changed over the last year; once a simple describing word i.e. ‘a plastic fork on the table’, it is now being used in much more ominous terms, with words like ‘suffocating’ and ‘evil’ being used in conjunction with it. Apparently, the nation’s children are taking our effect on the environment far more seriously than many world leaders (incidentally ‘Trump’ was the word of the year for 2017). Anyway, moving swiftly on from the ‘word of the year’ to the Track Of The Day, and I am listening to the new single ‘My Optical Best’ from Pavan, taken from their upcoming EP, which is due for release on the 25th July. Warm, scuffling beats provide the foundation for layers upon layers of rhythmic texture, with distorted, brassy synths in punchy ostinato and subtle falsetto vocals mingling with smooth sine waves and chilled out acoustic guitar. Enjoy.
