Guildford-based Annabel Allum launched into 2018 with new single Beat the Birds and now she’s ready to unveil a brand new track called ‘Rascal’. Expanding from her folk roots into fuzzier-slacker territory, Allum affirms her statement of intent with blistering riffs, frenetic vocals and culturally relevant themes.

Annabel says: “RASCAL pinpoints a phase in time when it felt like no matter what I was doing, it wouldn’t be right. Trying to look after myself, the people close to me, the people around me, and never finding a balance in any of it.  I would either give too much or nothing at all. I still do that. It’s quite a sad song. Self-scrutiny, really. I guess I’m just still learning that it’s okay to not be able to please everybody all the time.”

The brilliant new single premiered last night on Huw Stephens’ BBC Radio 1 Show, which you can listen to here from 1hr 14 minutes in. This morning also saw the editorial premiere of ‘RASCAL’ by The Independent, who described both ‘Beat the Birds’ and ‘RASCAL’ as ‘deeply affecting in their own way; both showcasing a strong talent for songwriting.’

Since the release of latest single ‘Beat the Birds’, Annabel gathered once again a substantial number of radio plays, including spins from Radio 1, Radio X, Absolute, KCRW and 6 Music and the track was made Huw Stephens’ Record of the Week on Radio 1, as well as BBC Introducing’s Tip of the Week. The song also placed on official Spotify playlist ‘Rocked’ as well and the video was then added to BT Music and Sub TV playlists. Support from blogs includes names such as Dork, The Fader, DIY, Wonderland, Earmilk and The Line of Best Fit – and many more.

‘Beat the Birds’ has been added to Radio X evening playlist and the singer has a BBC Introducing South live session confirmed for the week of the 2nd April 2018.

Annabel’s live reputation continues to grow. After gracing stages across Europe and the UK supporting Beth Ditto, she ended on a high note at a packed out show at Camden Assembly on 6th February (Amazing Radio’s ‘Gig of the Day’ & NME’s ‘Place to be’).
