Premiere: Slowlights ‘A Dream I Had’
Hello readers, Olivia here. It feels like recently I am always writing about my sleeping patterns, and for that I apologise, but I have always found the science and psychology of sleep completely fascinating, not least because I would describe myself as someone who has a very active nocturnal imagination. Most nights I experience very vivid dreams, often centred around recurring themes. One theme that comes up particularly frequently is animals; the dreams usually involve me trying to protect kittens, small birds, and puppies from threats ranging zombie attacks to light drizzle. So vivid are these dreams, I wake most mornings to find I have left track marks on the inside with my cheeks from grinding my teeth so violently, or bruises on my shins from tossing and turning. On one occasion I woke my partner urgently to tell him there was a fox in the bed and he was going to crush it if he didn’t get up and turn the light on immediately (it transpires I had been touching his hair in my sleep, which I gather is easily mistaken for a fox). In these dreams I am never surprised to find myself in the presence of so many tiny beings – it is accepted as a fact of life, a given. I would love to know the reason for these recurring dreams, but am wary of pseudo-scientific Freudian explanations (no penis envy here guys). Anyway, speaking of dreams, I would like to present ‘A Dream I Had‘ from London-based indie rock men Slowlights for which we have the pleasure of premiering for you on Killing Moon today. With a dark and brooding atmosphere, a rolling bass line to die for and wailing effect-heavy guitars, this track is so evocative of that strange no man’s land between sleeping and waking. A strong vocal performance from the band’s lead singer and a tight rhythm section turns an otherwise ethereal sound world into a solid pop track with an exceptional melody, further towing the line between the real and the imaginary. All in all, ‘A Dream I Had‘ is a track that will delight realists and dreamers alike. Have a dreamy weekend all.
