Interview: Vela

Pop is a funny old game. We recently discussed the meaning of the word in the context of describing what music is with a far-more-important journalist buddy of ours at a recent conference-turned-piss-up fest that shall remain nameless owing to the fact we seem to mention this on a daily basis, but you’ve probably guessed it anyways. He promptly informed us that, in his experience, pop has a duplicitous meaning in reference to a musical adjective; firstly, it can be used as a way of excusing bad music for that self-evident reason (e.g. “What [did] you think of that band?”…”Thought they were shit”…”Yeah, but they are pop though”…”Yeah, allow it”); on the other hand, it sums up music that is so appealing to the masses owing to the inherent nature of the beast, that it is quite uncategorisable in any other way. We featured Liverpool’s Vela as our Track Of The Day a little while back, and there is no doubt in our minds she is firmly in the latter category, with her lyrically-challenging and thoughtfully-composed individualised brand of…pop (see what happened there?). We asked her those same old questions that you’ve all come to know and love…

Could you introduce yourselves for the hi-brow readership of the Killing Moon blog?
Hi, I’m Vela. I write pop music. Pop music will never be low-brow…Gaga said so.

Favourite release of the last 12 months, and why?
Disc-Overy by Tinie Tempah. I just think it’s a really great record. Labrinth did a killer job on the production. The singles are all absolute smashers. I can still listen to Pass Out and Frisky and love every second despite how much I over-played them when they first came out. Gonna be a tough one for him to follow up.

Favourite show of the last 12 months, and why?

Caribou. I’m in love with their song Melody Day. I finally got to see them at Reading Festival last year and it was totally worth the wait. I love their setup on stage how they play in a tight little square. Makes them look like this awesome little unit. Love it!

If you could moon anyone, or anything, who or what would it be?
Haha brilliant! Mmmm I think I’d probably pull a moony at the moon. I’d be too embarrassed to get my bum fully out in broad daylight. Moonlight is wayyy more flattering!

You’re about to be killed. You get to pick one song to hear before your inevitable demise. What’s it gonna be?

Mr Blue Sky by ELO. It’s my favourite song of all time. It can make you feel so many emotions. You can jump around a room to it, cry to it. Also if I’m about to get killed then there’s that epic string section bit at the end which I feel is the perfect atmospheric music for my impending doom!

Killing In The Name Of, or Dark Side Of The Moon?
Killing In The Name Of.
