Poly Styrene

Interview: Poly Styrene

Here’s a quick history lesson for y’all. In the 1970’s there was a thing called the punk movement. As a brief overview, some say this was reflective of the social and political changes; others say its just a bunch of silly kids making noise and kicking up fuss. Either way, something happened. On the forefront of this fresh new scene was a band called X-Ray Spex, who some say were responsible for one of the “greatest albums on all time”, called Germ Free Adolescents. Like some bands tend to do, they broke up. Then the reformed again. Then they broke up again. Now, some 30-35 years down the line, frontwoman Poly Styrene has gone all solo on everyone’s ass by announcing the release of an album, Generation Indigo, preceeded by a single, Virtual Boyfriend, much to the welcoming applause of both fans and industry alike. Poly took 5 and chatted all manners of crap with us. Here we go…

Could you introduce yourselves for the hi-brow readership of the Killing Moon blog?

Poly  Styrene

[KM: Nice, nice…abrupt and to the point. We don’t like time wasters around here, that’s for sure]

Favourite release of the last 12 months, and why?

I try not to listen to new music as I don’t want to get influenced in my writing.  I was watching the Brits though the other day and I thought there were some good voices on there.

Favourite show of the last 12 months, and why?

Jools Holland NYE had good energy.

[KM: Dang, The Brits? Jools Holland? You’re totally swinging with the big dawgs. We’re great to take to a party – so if you’re ever asking, we’ll be dancing]

If you could moon anyone, or anything, who or what would it be?

Gone off mooning  since I got diagnosed with cancer.

You’re about to be killed. You get to pick one song to hear before your inevitable demise. What’s it gonna be?

My Sweet Lord, George Harrison

[KM: JUST for you, Poly – and we don’t do this for everyone – here is a youtube montage video of George Harrison LOOKING like a sweet lord, whilst SINGING Sweet Lord. Doesn’t that just blow your MIND??]
