We won’t bore you with how great a time we had at Primavera. Just know that it was a truly, truly great time. Away from all of…this, we guess. Our far-better half wasted little-to-no time documenting more or less every instance of us giving it all “just got to reply to this” and/or “just gotta speak to that”. Which was a fair amount. In terms of personal bests, we feel that we’ve had our best attempt thus far at trying to keep this shit to a necessary minimum; indeed we found ourselves at several points mid-conversation with certain people (in a manner designed to convince ourselves more than anyone else) that we are definitely not talking about work. Thereby bringing those conversations to an almost-immediate end. We more often that not find ourselves under some sort of personal-character attack (then again, we’re somewhat in a league of our own when it comes to what actually qualifies as a personal characteristic and an attack therein) for not being able to “switch off” – as if this shit is something that comes with a simple on/off switch – however we did take stock of the rather large contingent of those we work alongside who also cannot seem to accept the fact that we are indeed on a rather well-deserved vacation. So we know it’s not just us solely responsible for our general obsessiveness in this sense. Just because we’re paranoid doesn’t mean they’re not after us, or something cryptically smart-arsed like that. Anyway, here’s us breaking our two-ish week blog silence – something else that used to derive a high degree of anxiety for us in previous years on account of a fear of losing relevance, which we also feel we have improved on since last year at least – and we’re pretty pleased to do that for this guy Jolé. Rumour has it that we wrote about him in the Track Of The Day capacity a little while back, and so from that accolade we can at least infer that we like this guy to some extent. We do recall having to come to terms with the pronunciation of his name given the spicy nature of that accented letter on the end of it; but perhaps given we’re positively embroiled in cool-as-fuck Catalonian culture following a week in beautiful Barcelona (by the way, UK, they do indeed think of us as a laughing stock for even thinking about leaving the EU. And who can blame them? It is absolutely fucking mental) we don’t see it as such a big deal anymore. Which allows us to concentrate on the new shit this guy has recently put out, namely a track called New Start, which we can all check out and gawp at below. Might as well get to know him too huh? Especially as we’re this chill right now…
Jolé – New Start
Could you introduce yourselves for the hi-brow readership of the Killing Moon blog?
I’m Josh Oliver, 24 from Brighton currently writing songs under the pseudonym of Jolé.
KM: Which is, like, Josh and Oliver smooshed together in a spicy way right? WE UNDERSTAND.
Jolé – Nothing Has Changed
Favourite release of the last 12 months, and why?
I would have to say Sufjan Stevens – Carrie and Lowell. It’s by far his most mainstream but I was listening to it so much at a time when I was just starting to write under the name Jolé, it was a massive influence on the first songs I wrote. It really resonated with me and it’s such a touching and honest record.
KM: We feel that. It took us a full year after The National’s High Violet came out for us to appreciate the record away from the associated pop-hype game. Also, you’ve made a fucking good choice.[youtube=https://youtu.be/dsGODTySH0E?list=PL67VKSNJdY_XBvoFECHFKyesxnDhTVM8N]
Favourite show of the last 12 months, and why?
I went to see Half Moon Run at All Saint’s Church in Brighton earlier this year. The venue was incredible and Half Moon Run are one of the tightest bands I have seen live. They had the whole audience in the palm of their hands for the whole show. I did see Lionel Richie at Glastonbury last year though…can I have 2?
KM: With that calibre of music taste? It would be very shit of us not to.[youtube=https://youtu.be/sEE45DxhrTE] [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2loAvrLNK0]
If you could moon anyone, or anything, who or what would it be?
I’m not a political guy but it would need to be Donald Trump. He’s one of few people I wouldn’t mind putting through the pain of having to look at my backside.
KM: We don’t think he’s really a political guy either. More just a straight up cunt with money.
You’re about to be killed. You get to pick one song to hear before your inevitable demise. What’s it gonna be?
Is another human killing me? I would stick on Bohemian Rhapsody. Have a sing along with my killers then get down to business…
KM: Funnily enough we’ve never been asked that before – we assume it would be a human, because we imagine you have more chance of being killed by your fellow human rather than your fellow animal. Humans are a bit shit like that. Here’s your bo-rap…[youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJ9rUzIMcZQ]
Killing In The Name Of, or Dark Side Of The Moon?
Killing in The Name Of.
KM: Perfect score. Think that’s the first time we’ve not felt the need to take the piss out of an interviewee. You WIN.
Jolé’s new single New Start is out now.
Thanks to Joe Brine at Pavement.
