Interview: So Below
For about 24 hours, which largely covered most of yesterday, we were a total fucking bastard. Yapping and snapping at pretty much everyone. Its Draper, you see. He’s got us running around like any given muppet who’s on the same shit as Animal. You know those TV shows about strange women who take their weddings to the Nth degree – the kind who get all crazy when the fish caterer has procured one less cod than they were supposed to, or if the upholstery in the ceremony is more of a blue-ish hue than the turquoise that they’ve obviously been dreaming about since they were a little girls? Well, that was us. Anything running behind by a millisecond? We’ll kill you. Impact date switching from this week to that one? We’ll send you home to your mama. Wanna have a friendly chat when we’re quite visibly and furiously tapping away at things? Your days are numbered. Fortunately for everybody concerned, Label Manager Tom was onboard to listen and generally absorb most if not all of our fusty-mustiness, so let’s all be grateful to him for that otherwise it would be entirely possible something much worse than this weird vein on our forehead throbbing like…a horrible throbbing thingy. We all know what that looks like. Anyway, onto more uplifting pursuits – we featured this bright new spark called So Below a little while back (we say a little while back because we can’t remember exactly when that was. According to our tapestry, life only began in a really stressful way yesterday) and lets just say that she not only has some incredible music more-recent-than-her-recent-Track-Of-The-Day atop a steed of buzzy electro-pop glory by the name of Far which you can check out below, but also she seems to have got quite a few admirers in all the right places to embiggen the aforementioned tunes. She’s got a whole bloody EP of em. Which is cool. It’s that kind of time to bring in our protagonist in for a chat to figure out just what in the name of all that is delicious and meaty she thinks she’s playing at. Let’s do this thing.

Could you introduce yourself for the hi-brow readership of the Killing Moon blog?
Sure! My name is Maddie North and I have a musical project called So Below. Electronic pop would be the best description, however I jokingly called it gothpop on SoundCloud and that sort of stuck hahah.
KM: Gothpop is no bloody joke mate. We’ve recently been informed of a cyber-goth perpetual club (playlists are inclusive of pop derivatives of the goth aesthetic, according to our mole) in existence on the mean streets of Camden in London. Apparently it looks like a scene out of The Matrix. Some serious shit, we’re sure you’ll agree.

Favourite release of the last 12 months, and why?
I guess my first release Drift! I didn’t really think it would get many listens, and I just didn’t expect people to like it as much as i did. When I woke up the next day it had something like 3,000 plays and a couple of blogs had featured it, best feeling ever.
KM: We love your instinct is to big up your own shit. You’ll go far in this savage garden we call a world, Madeleine. It also saves us having to search for and subsequently comment upon music of a third party that quite likely we know very little about. So yeah. Cheers, innit.

Favourite show of the last 12 months, and why?
Like live show? I haven’t been to a ton, but I saw Caribou I think at the Fonda in LA. I love their music and they have such an interesting live show. Also they just looked like they were having fun doing it which is always important.
KM: Exactly like live show! We saw Caribou, like, a lot last year. The tail end of their set at Primavera last year was seemingly a lot stronger than the set we saw at Field Day. Then again, we were very, very drunk at the former, and annoyed that we were even at the latter. Riddle us that.
If you could moon anyone, or anything, who or what would it be?
Moon like show someone my butt? Hahah I can’t say thats ever been a goal of mine, I don’t know, I’m a huge Frank Sinatra fan so maybe him? That way he would be alive again and we could hang out, maybe grab a bite to eat and become besties. That is if he wasn’t too offended I showed him my butt.
KM: Exactly like show someone your butt! Pretty sure Frank was more than used to all sorts of people revealing all sorts of fleshy bits to him, so good one.
You’re about to be killed. You get to pick one song to hear before your inevitable demise. What’s it gonna be?
AHH JEEEZE MATE thats a tough one. I was thinking maybe Nude or Codex by Radiohead but they’re so depressing hahaha. Maybe Codex coz even though its depressing the lyrics are so pretty about lakes and dragonflies.
KM: Exactly like being…..Oh. Ok. You’re one of those “maybe” people. Bet you’d be a real pain to organise social outings with. Wanna come see Radiohead? Yeah maybe. We know what you’re about MATE. COMMIT. Here’s Codex. Maybe its an official video, maybe not. WE JUST DON’T KNOW FOR SURE.
Killing In The Name Of, or Dark Side Of The Moon?
I can’t say I ever listened to Rage, so definitely Dark Side.
So Below’s eponymous debut EP is out now.
