Interview: One Bit

One Bit

Our relationship with electronic music has been on an ostensible par with that concerning our supposed cultural and familial heritage; in that up until quite recently, we’ve ignored it on the basis that it didn’t really suit our darkly-cool pop-punk-esque image. Or at least the image we have spent the majority of our adolescence and subsequent young-ish adulthood trying to project unto others with little-to-no success. Let that be a lesson that ultimately you can’t deny who you really are forever no matter what the storybooks say. Some years ago we met a little squirt called Draper who ultimately taught us (not specifically mind, as we are likely the most music technologically-challenged person/collective/entity that you are ever going to encounter) that dance music production can be as beautifully constructed as anything else purporting itself to be remotely alternative; or at the very least he made the wider genre of EDM (don’t shoot us for calling it that, it’s what the fucking kids call it and we’re trying to relate to ’em) a lot easier for us to digest having shown us a glimpse of the type of genius it requires to qualify under the nomenclature “producer”. One Bit, both collectively and as the two disseminated individuals that make up this unit, in our mind also comfortably qualify under this broad and infinitely diverse (which is one of the main things we dig about it all, we guess) genre. The guys were kind enough to let us include Daydream on the most recent compilation we put out with homie Ally McCrae; more recently they’ve decided to put out new effort Won’t Hold Back as well as landing themselves on some kinda BBC Radio 1 In New Music We Trust playlist. And as we seem to be the one person in the wider London music bizzy-biz community that hasn’t actually gotten around to see them, we thought it would be a fucking great idea to invite the buggers to play at our latest Club NME @ Koko takeover this Friday to share stage duties with our own guy Rogue. Should be delicious. We then thought it’d be good to, like, y’know, talk to these guys. Get inside ’em. Make ’em famous. That sort of thing. Let’s do this.

One Bit – Won’t Hold Back

Could you introduce yourselves for the hi-brow readership of the Killing Moon blog?

Good day sirs / madams, for those of you don’t know us we are an indie / electronic duo called One Bit.

Imagine big bass lines, intricate percussion and organic sounding synths with a more indie vocal. We’re a two piece and therefore in a constant battle to be able to play as many instruments simultaneously as possible which has resulted in a great love for sample pads and looping functions! The rest is relatively self-explanatory – hopefully the music can do the talking.
KM: ORRRRRRRRRRRR we could let this fuckin’ video do some talkin’, AMIRIGHTGUYS??

Favourite release of the last 12 months, and why?
Probably Bombay Bicycle Club‘s So Long, See You Tomorrow. We think it’s great how all their albums sound so different from each other & we feel like they pushed a lot of boundaries in this.
KM: Good choice. We saw Bombay at Latitude. We feel asleep to ’em in front of the main stage. It was great.

Favourite show of the last 12 months, and why?
Royal Blood were pretty mega at Liverpool Sound City this year. It was just after they blew up and everyone was going nuts – including loads of people I thought would never listen to that kind of music. We love that they’ve really opened a lot of peoples minds to different kinds of music.
KM: Ah, THOSE GUYS. Again, we’re finding it difficult to fault you here. Although we’re a bit pissed off you didn’t say Racing Glaciers who indeed played the same stage, on the same night, at the same festival. We have to hate you now. Pretty fucked up, you guys. Also we tried to find live footage from/by the aforementioned, but it sucked some serious D so we’re playing the Reading Festival card right now.

If you could moon anyone, or anything, who or what would it be?
Anyone in a warm country – it’d be good to get out the studio and get some vitamin D…
KM: Ahem – Vitamin D? hyuk hyuk hyuuuuuuuuuuuuk….
 Mooning beach
You’re about to be killed. You get to pick one song to hear before your inevitable demise. What’s it gonna be?
The Final Countdown
KM: Oooooooh, SNAPPY. Also our entrance music, occasionally.

Killing In The Name Of, or Dark Side Of The Moon?
Even though our dads would be ‘disappointed’ in us, it’s got to be Killing In The Name Of.
KM: No offence, but your collective dads don’t know shit.
Won’t Hold Back is out now, and you can download it from the One Bit Soundcloud page.
