Spotlight Kid
“Plan Comes Apart”

As you may or may not have seen us bleating on about the end being pretty much nigh for festival season and the summer in general, this is the part of the year we like to call “the big ass mop up”. Essentially this means ploughing through lists-upon-lists of bands that we were really meant to go and see at this summer’s roll out of outdoor events, but were otherwise indisposed by virtue of idleness, beer, or the ever-lethal combination of idleness and beer. What can we say, we’re just slaves to whatever particular groove we happen to find ourselves lodged in. Over-zealous as this might seem, this routine of noting down every single band name we come across to eventually check it out, ideally within a 2-3 week turnaround, has actually worked pretty well so far. And by Admiral Ackbar’s massive googly squid eyeballs, it has worked a treat again. Nottingham’s Spotlight Kid have themselves succumbed to a ridiculously busy summertime schedule, performing a most-triumphant set on the BBC Introducing Stage at this year’s Glastonbury Festival amongst other appearances, and are currently gearing up for their October tour to promote their forthcoming album out in September. Influence-wise, these dudes have got it all going on – Beach House meets Joy Formidable (the latter of which were supported by our current subjects at Koko some months back), or perhaps Health meets Glasvegas (sans-the annoying hype-pitched wailing between vocal breaths) – whatever it is, we’re hooked on it, and very much look forward to seeing this outfit touch down in London once more when they play The Underbelly on 21st October.

And for an extra mid-week treat, here’s the moment in Return Of The Jedi where the good Admiral realises he’s about to get bummed by the Empire…
