Interview: Young Buffalo
Can we just start off by dispensing with the usual smarmy banter and just saying that Young Buffalo are simply our favourite band to have come out of last year? Well, yeah, we can. Following a similar musical path as fellow Americans Local Natives, Alex, Ben and Jim from Mississippi have been turning up the heat in the UK, as well as the heads of the vast majority of the music industry, ever since some awe-inspiring performances at last year’s SXSW. Soon after the boys were snapped up for management by the somewhat aptly-named Wildlife Entertainment (the same beautiful people that brought you Arctic Monkeys, Travis, and Morning Parade amongst others), quickly followed by a record deal with respected US indie label Fat Possum. Most of 2010 saw the boys holed up in a recording studio in their native Oxford, and we here in London should be bracing ourselves for when the band touch down for two big shows in February following a UK single release for their much-blogged-about track Catapilah. But before all this, the dudes treated Killing Moon by answering our most gruelling and punishing questions yet. Check it:
Could you introduce yourselves for the hi-brow readership of the Killing Moon blog?
Alex: I’m a cancer, but I was almost born a leo.
Ben: I’m the best grandpa in the world. Think I’m lying? I got the shirt to prove it.
Jim: Ben’s also the worst grandpa in the world. They just don’t make t-shirts for that title.
Favourite release of the last 12 months, and why?
Alex: Deerhunter’s Halcyon Digest has got to be mine. Just try to get “Helicopter” out of your head- you won’t.
Ben: Sleigh Bell’s Treats. They’re like the Kills on crack, and I like it.
Jim: Melted by Ty Segall is the jam. Saw this guy in a living room in Austin, TX last year. You should hear this dude now.
Alex: The Dig at Bowery Ballroom, because I love it when a band I’ve never heard of before comes out and just plain rules.
Ben: Women at the Hi-Tone in Memphis. The things those guys do with their instruments is incredible and the songs are too.
Jim: I’m with Ben on this one. We were lucky enough to share the stage with these guys before they disbanded or something and they put on suchhh a good show. Really wish they would start playing again. They’re great.
If you could moon anyone, or anything, who or what would it be?
Alex: Kanye West
Ben: Harry Caray’s ghost.
Jim: Kanye West– and Fergie. She sucks.
Alex: The Fool by Neutral Milk Hotel
Ben: The Ballad of El Goodo by Big Star
Jim: Strangers by the Kinks
Killing In The Name Of, or Dark Side Of The Moon?
Alex: That’s a tough one- if you had asked me in High School I would have said Killing in the Name Of, but these days I’d have to go with Dark Side.
Ben: Definitely Dark Side. I’d rather mellow out than get wrecked in a mosh pit.
Jim: Gotta love some Rage, but I’m not an angry person. Ben and I listened to the entire Dark Side of the Moon on the road one night. It was the shit.
Young Buffalo play the Lexington on 16th February and Hoxton Bar & Kitchen on 17th February.
‘Catapilah’ is out on 14th February on Young & Lost.
