Every so often, we are absolutely delighted by news consisting of artists we really dug back in the day, who for some reason were seemingly overlooked at the time, but then go on to re-emerge in all the buzzy glory they richly deserve. To put this latest ID-piece into context, we were going to name the pre-emerged act, but our subject of today’s critique, the much-loved Star Slinger, has politely asked us not to. So we won’t.
Over the course of the last 6 months, Darren Williams’ musical persona has been hailed as one of the pioneers of fresh music production and remixing skills over recent years. It all started with a little beat-tape and “a few rogue remixes” back in 2010, the latter consisting of Deerhunter, The Go! Team, Broken Social Scene and The Morning Benders amongst others. Going rogue evidently sounds fucking brilliant.

Pretty soon, as things typically do, shit got real and the Nottingham-turned-Mancunian beatmaker attracted the attention of several reputable independents, resulting in an EP release through NYC-based indie label Mexican Summer, which is due for release late January/early February 2011.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkoA51vm-r4] [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y-u5YmhNCdw]
So as things go from strength to strength, Star Slinger is off to the USA in February to tour with electronic Aphex-types Baths. London-types however can catch the boy-wonder just prior to him setting off performing his indie-beatbox-mashups and other dreamy-pop jams at a Vice Feburary Issue launch show at the Old Blue Last on 27th January. Expect the usual A&R scrum to be in attendence.[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OeJRXEBTdA&feature=related]
